
Can a few new lamps actually speed up your old blow molder?
If you’re running an older PET machine, you probably think the only way to get more bottles out the door is to drop a fortune on a brand-new machine. I get it. It feels like you’ve hit a wall. But here’s the thing: usually, it’s not the machine’s mechanical parts holding you back. It’s the heat. If your lamps are worn out or you’re using some generic off-brand replacements, you’re wasting time. Swapping those out for certified Sidel-spec infrared elements can actually shave time off your heating window. The heat struggle To move faster, your preform needs to hit that sweet spot—the glass transition temperature—quickly. But you can’t just blast it with random heat, or you’ll scorch the plastic. This is where people mess up. They throw in a cheap lamp that doesn’t match the original wattage or voltage. The result? The preform stays too cold, and you end up with “pearlization” or walls that are way too thin in some spots and thick in others. We make sure our lamps match the OEM specs exactly. It keeps the heat steady across the whole zone, so you aren’t guessing. The gear that actually lasts We use high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because rapid cycling is brutal on equipment, and this stuff can handle the thermal shock without cracking. The filaments are tuned for shortwave infrared. It sounds technical, but it basically means the heat sinks deeper into the PET wall instead of just dancing on the surface. And we don’t cut corners on the connectors. Whether it’s R7s or Sk15, they fit tight. A loose connection is a nightmare—it causes arcing, which is a fast track to a burnt-out socket. One quick heads-up Now, if you switch to higher-output lamps, you can run your oven faster or at lower temps. It’s great. But there’s a catch. More heat in the oven means your cooling blow-air has to do more work. If your chiller is acting up or your blower is clogged, adding more heat will just warp your bottles. Check your airflow first. Once you know the air is moving, wire up the new lamps and watch the output climb.
